Closing the loop through the driver

When evaluating vehicle dynamics with a human driver on a simulator it is very important to close the loop through the driver and the vehicle model as quickly as possible with the minimum latency. The simulator will provide a number of cues stimulating the driver's senses, e.g. audio, video, haptic, vestibular. rFpro's architecture has been designed to couple the pipelines that deliver these stimuli as closely as possible to the vehicle model while minimizing the length of time each pipeline takes to deliver information to the driver.

120 fps Standard

If there is perceptible delay between the vehicle model and a human driver or sensor-based ADAS control system, then control inputs will lag the behaviour of the vehicle. All rFpro digital road models are built to run at a minimum of 120fps on our standard reference hardware. The rFpro graphics engine is incredibly efficient for ground-based simulation, even while running realtime reflections, shadows and atmospheric modeling.

This results in a very smooth display with the minimum possible latency in the video pipeline.

Fastest audio & video pipelines

For our audio and video pipelines rFpro has implemented direct hardware interfaces, in both cases significantly reducing latency. Our video pipeline is typically 2-4 frames faster than a native DirectX or Open/GL application, while maintaining channel synchronisation across all the projectors to within 100┬Ás. Our direct audio pipeline shaves 60ms from the standard Windows drivers.
